This project, completed in April 2026, built on the work of the highly successful Fit for Digital Linguistic Education Erasmus+ project (2020-2023), which developed materials to help language teachers in the adult education sector improve their digital competences.
Having seen at close hand the impact that technology is having on both teachers and learners, project partners from Finland, Austria, Italy, Greece and Spain were keen to provide teachers with a new batch of training and other resources to help them make the most of new technologies such as AI while at the same time being able to deal with the challenges that digital tools sometimes cause. Exact topics were fixed once we’d asked our target groups about their main priorities.
Our specific objectives were:
to help teachers develop their digital competence, so that they are more able to make the most of the digital tools available;
– to improve feedback practices, including through the use of digital tools;
– to improve inclusion and accessibility, so that disadvantaged groups, such as those with Specific Learning Differences can learn more effectively;
– to promote digital resilience and media literacy, so that users can take care of themselves online and think carefully about what they encounter there;
– to encourage teachers to make productive use of new digital tools such as AI to enrich their teaching, and to help learners to make positive use of the tools too.
We created four main project outputs, which can be accessed through the project website: https://www.empower4digiline.eu/ All but the main policy report (1 below) are available in English, Finnish, German, Greek, Italian and Spanish.
Project results are:
1. Policy report (EN only). Based on 501 survey responses and in-person interviews with 24 language educators, the report provides an in-depth picture of the current language teaching situation in Europe and the most urgent challenges that language educators face. The main report is in English, with summaries available in all project languages. Project results were then developed to address the needs expressed in these consultations.
2. Online train-the-trainer course. 10 interactive modules to help educators learn about: using new technology such as AI in language education; feedback and assessment with digital tools; inclusion and support for learners with Specific Learning Differences; and developing digital resilience and media literacy for both themselves and their learners. There are also sets of downloadable summary cards for all modules.
3: Digital resilience game. A free, easy to use online game to help language learners and teachers build digital resilience and media literacy, and to develop their own digital competences. 8 modules, with questions, hints and follow-up facts: about 10 minutes’ playing time each. Each module uses a grammar / linguistic element at B1 level, so it can also be used for language learning. For teachers, there is also a teacher guide with no-prep classroom activities and other support materials.
4: Video-based MOOC. 6 sets of videos for teachers, giving practical examples of how digital tools can be used to help empower learners and to enhance the learning experience. Topics covered are: SLDs; digital resilience; AI; inclusion; bringing learning to life; and giving feedback. Each video ends with reflection questions or follow-up exercises. Videos are in English, with subtitles in project languages: there are also summary cards containing the main points in all languages.
The project webpage also includes blogs and articles about language teaching and/or making use of digital tools. You’ll also find more on the project’s Facebook, Instagram and YouTube channels.
